INTRODUCTION

Maca is the root of a Peruvian plant Lepidium meyenii (Brassicaceae), growing in the Central Andean Region of Peru between 4000 and 4500 meters of altitude, mainly in Junin and Cerro de Pasco. This species is described in the catalogue of the flowering plants and gymnosperms of Peru. Maca have been traditionally employed, among others, to improve sexuality and fertility. Oral administration of Maca significantly improved the sexual behaviour in male rats and mice. More recently, it has been demonstrated that Maca improves spermatogenesis in male rats.

Dry maca hypocotyls have the following composition: 59% carbohydrates, 10.2% proteins, 8.5% fibre and 2.2% lipids among a few other compounds (Dini et al. 1994).

Maca has a large amount of essential amino acids and higher levels of iron and calcium than the white potato. In addition, it contains important amounts of fatty acids, of which linoleic, palmitic and oleic acids are the most prominent. Maca has a high mineral content, in particular Fe, Ca and Cu. Alkaloids are also present. read more –>

MACA HISTORY

In early times (1600 b.C), maca was appreciated not only as nutritious food, but also as a gift of the gods along with corn and potatoes. Mountain Raco in Junín was considered the god of stewed food. In its honour, the natives buried potatoes and maca there among other offerings. Maca also was used in beverages with hallucinogenic products in dances and religious ceremonies (Castro de León 1990). Today in the local markets it is advertised as an aphrodisiac, stamina-builder and fertility-promoter. It is also often promoted as a cure for rheumatism, respiratory ailments and as a laxative. Dried maca roots are ground to power and sold in drugstores in capsules as a medicine and food supplement to increase stamina and fertility. Because of these putative virtues, maca is also known by the name of Peruvian ginseng (Rea 1992).read more –>

Maca – Nutritional Profile

Maca has been used and venerated by native Peruvians for being an excellent natural source of vitamins and minerals. Living in the highlands is tough, oxygen is scarce and the living conditions are difficult. Maca has been their natural source of Iron needed for the blood production and oxygen transportation within the body, that’s why maca has been very useful for the adaptation of the Incas to the high altitudes.

The researches made on Maca have demonstrated its huge amounts of nutritive elements like a rich variety of minerals (iron, sodium, calcium…), vitamins (B1, B2, E …), amino acids. Vitamins:

Maca has a rich variety of vitamins in its composition; that’s why many people take it as a nutritive complement. Among the vitamins found in maca, we have: vitamin B1, B2, B, C, E …

Thiamine- B1 this vitamin convert blood sugar to energy (co-enzyme) – very active people like sportsmen need specially this vitamin for efficient nutrient absorption from food. This vitamin will also help you feel more active and have more energy for your day to day living.

Riboflavin-B2 Helps body release energy from protein/carbohydrates/fat, and to cope better with stressful situations; essential to life. Lack of HCl leads to inefficient B2 absorption.

Minerals:

Iron is the responsible of blood production and oxygen transportation within the body, that’s why maca has been very useful for the adaptation of the Incas to the high altitudes where oxygen is scarce.

Potassium Important to maintain the acid/alkaline balance required for efficient cellular activity. Regulates body’s electrical activity (ie. heartbeat) and carries nerve messages to muscles, releasing some hormones and neurotransmitters en route.

Calcium Maca has the higher concentration of this mineral than other vegetal of his gender. Calcium is the most abundant mineral in the human body, very important to the teeth, bones and for the normal levels of growing for children.read more –>

  • I want to know if maca helps to treat menopause problems?
We have many clients who buy maca from our store to relieve the menopause symptoms. We work with Dr. Malaspina who is treating, for more than 20 years, his patients with maca.
He suggests that the efficiency of maca, treating menopause problems, is more than 95%. It means that almost all his patients are being relieved from those menopause problems taking maca.
Maca benefits the body not just on a nutritional level, but also attune it on the hormonal, emotional and physical levels as well. Maca stimulates our master glands, the pituitary and hypothalamus, to re-direct our hormones to optimal function.
In recent years, many concerned women have turned to Maca as a natural alternative to Hormone Replacement Therapy (HRT). Previously, the choices for women were largely artificial and carried with them a range of potential side-effects. Rather than introducing hormones from the outside, which can send a message to the body to shut down its own hormone production, Maca effectively encourages the glands in the body to produce the hormones needed for each individual’s unique requirements.

Maca is a safe root. It is been consumed for centuries in Peru and for many years in Europe and America. In toxicity studies conducted by many laboratories, Maca showed absolutely no toxicity and no adverse pharmacological effects.

  • Maca dosage
What’s the best way of taking maca?. Is it better to take maca capsules or maca powder?. Freddy

Re: Maca dosage

Maca is an aliment and it has no special dosage or defined consumption but scientists have made researches using maca powder and maca capsules with the next dosage:

Maca powder: they advise the consumption from 5gr. to 10gr. daily. Maca capsules: it is advised to take from 3 to 6 capsules of 500mg daily. There is, of course, no maximum limit taking maca but a higher consumption doesn’t mean the increase of its nutraceutic action.

  • I’ve got a question about maca powder. I’ve found on your site two kinds of maca powder and one gelatinized. What’s the difference between gelatinized and normal maca powder.
As you mention on your question, we have two kinds of maca powder. Normal maca and gelatinized maca powder. This last powder is made of the normal powder but with an extra process colled gelatinization.
Gelatinization is an extrusion process that removes the starch from the root leaving a more concentrated powder that is easier to digest. Gelatinized maca mixes easier into food and beverages.

  • Does maca only grow in Peru?, and where exactly in Peru?.
Maca is a Peruvian root which grows high in the Andean Mountains (about 4000 meters). It was originally cultivated in the Junin region (Peru) centuries ago by native populations. It is nowadays cultivated in that Area and the surrounding ones. It is a national treasure for the local population because they live and feed with maca.
However, As the fame of this root grew, Neighbour countries (Bolivia, Ecuador) started to plant maca some years ago, for benefiting of this commercial success.
About the quality of the Bolivian or Ecuadorian maca, we don’t know if there is any significant difference. We use the Junin maca (where it was originally discovered).
